Baloney & Cereal Twenty-Eleven Sillies: Movies

I haven't seen The Descendants yet - and I really want to - but I'm suddenly sick and in a bad mood, so I'm not going to force myself to see it now. Let's just assume it's on my list of favorite films of 2011. Let's also assume you couldn't pay me to watch War Horse or Hugo. Because you couldn't. Anyway, here's my shoddy list for Favorite Films of 2011 (see, aforementioned illness):

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - The more I think about it, the more I love it. And the less dark I find it. Seriously, I loved this twisted movie.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol - Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg and cool stunts. Most Re-watchable Film of the Year.

50/50 - Comedy of the year. Cancer film of the year.

Crazy, Stupid, Love. - I just watched this yesterday, and for a romantic dramedy -- not exactly my favorite genre -- I loved it. My crush on Emma Stone doesn't hurt. For the record, I choose her over Ryan Gosling, but it's close. It's a really lovely multigenerational story of love and soulmates. And I still liked it.  Go figure.

Drive - It's the Year of Ryan Gosling. Super cool, ultra violent. Now that's my kind of flick!

Attack the Block - Best British film, best alien film.

Young Adult - Charlize Theron: my immature bitch hero.

Super 8 - Second Most Re-watchable Film of the Year.

Baloney & Cereal Twenty-Eleven Sillies: Music

I tend to become obsessed with songs about 3 years after they're popular.  To whit, my current playlist includes:

"Forever" - Drake
"Black Sheep" - Metric
"We're In This Together" - Nine Inch Nails

Actual current music that I enjoyed this year?

Adele, 21, particularly "Turning Tables" and "Set Fire to the Rain."

Mumford & Sons, Sigh No More, which totally counts as a 2011 album because that's the year it won awards, and it's still getting nominated even though it came out in 2009.  I love singing along to their songs, all the more so because Mike can't stand them.

Florence + The Machine, Ceremonials.  Go ahead and don't sing along to "Shake It Out."

Foo Fighters, Wasting Light, still making awesome rock music.

The best (and only) concerts I attended this year: Linkin Park and Rush!  Yeah, I'm hella current.

Baloney & Cereal Twenty-Eleven Sillies: TV

As always, I'm waiting til the last minute to try to catch a couple more movies before I can give my Top Whatever list.  But TV is my live-in boyfriend, and I can safely give my list now.  Though I'm still worried I've forgotten something....

1. Breaking Bad.  There's TV, and then there's Breaking Bad.  Honestly, it's in a class by itself in terms of writing, acting, and visuals.  2011 was awesome solely because it's the year I finally caught up on this show.  There's a reason it's on everyone's Best Of All-Time TV Ever Ever Ever lists.  If you haven't watched it yet, there's plenty of time to catch up.  Do it.  I've already seen the first 3 seasons 3 times and the most recent one twice.  Is that wrong?  No.  And if you catch up now, you get to watch them all in a row without having to wait a week to a year between episodes; it's the best way to do it.  Do it.

2. Justified.  So excited this is coming back in a matter of days!!  It is some badass, cool TV, and Timothy Olyphant is wonderful.  Looking forward to hearing the awesome dialogue again!

3. Parks & Recreation.  You know what this list has going for it so far?  The best casts - and characters - on television.  Every single character on Parks & Rec is awesome and I want to hug them all every week.  This is the only show guaranteed to leave me smiling every week.  Yes, it is literally funnier than Community.

4. Homeland.  Holy crap, this was some awesome TV.  Think 24 in terms of the terrorism angle, but it's different.  Week to week you're not sure who the good guys and bad guys are.  Claire Danes is so amazing on this show and if she doesn't win an Emmy, the world sucks.  She gets crazier as the season goes on and it's wonderful to watch.  Mandy Patinkin is also awesome -- and those are words I never thought I'd say.

5. Community.  Whereas I find Parks & Rec to be laugh-out-loud funnier, this show is crazy-funny.  I can't believe the stuff they get away with.  An episode devoted to several different possible timelines?  Craziness!  It's the kind of bold comedy that is not destined to last long, but at least we'll have a few seasons to rewatch once it's gone.

6.  Game of Thrones.  A series I was not expecting to like as much as I did.  It's not normally the kind of thing I'd go for, but it's another collection of awesome characters and stories.  I really loved this show, and was surprised by it.

7. Tosh.0.  OK, this is actually the most laugh-out-loud-funny show on TV.

8. Fringe.  I miss my show; it's still both bold and good fun.  Multiple universes, timelines, versions of characters - gotta love it.  This season added Lincoln Lee to the cast of characters and I couldn't be happier.  Unless they brought back Charlie.

9. Sons of Anarchy.  I finally caught up on this show this year, and loved it.  This year's season wasn't the best, but it's still better than most of the crap on TV.  It's ambitious and ballsy and badass.  I really loved the second season and hope the white supremacists make their way back to the show.  Here again we have a lot of great characters; I especially love Opie and Tig.

10. Sherlock.  This was a quick little 3-part British mini-series, but it's coming back in 2012 too.  It's a modern-day retelling of the Sherlock Holmes characters and it's excellent.  And who doesn't love Martin Freeman in anything?  I'll tell you who - Communists.

These Shows Really Suck But I Used To Love Them And So Help Me God The Shows Listed Above Better Not End Up Like Them: Chuck and The Office.  They are mostly painful to watch now, and I don't know why I'm sticking with them, other than I never surrender!

Baloney & Cereal Twenty-Ten Sillies: Movies

Well, I'm not able to see The Fighter or 127 Hours this weekend, but I think those movies are more about the performances anyway. So I'll just move ahead with my Best Of list. To be a great movie, you need to be something I want to see again, solid, and entertaining. This is my list of must-see movies for 2010.

9. Shutter Island. I didn't review this movie because I didn't see it until it was on the plane home from London. But it was creepy and cool. I even knew the "twist ending" in advance and I still really liked it. Man, I don't even like Leonardo DiCaprio and he's in 2 of my Top Movies. Maybe I like him now.

8. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Because this list needed a comedy.

7. Black Swan. It's beautifully-filmed, and should be seen for Natalie Portman's performance. Plus it's creepy and will stay with you for a while.

6. The Book of Eli. The best post-apocalyptic movie of the year. I loved the browned-out look of it, the coolness of Denzel Washington, and the ending that sticks with you.

5. Kick-Ass. Best superhero movie of the year. It's fun watching kids kick adult ass, but it was also a touching film.

4. The Social Network. The best Facebook movie of the year. The script and cocky asshole-ness of Jesse Eisenberg make for a great movie.

3. True Grit. The best Western of the year. A great movie populated by those bizarre Coen Brothers characters you love. Standout performances by Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and that new girl.

2. The Town. Best crime drama of the year. Exciting, great performances, and Boston accents!

1. Inception. This was simply the most original film of 2010. It's not a remake, it's not based on a book - this is all Christopher Nolan's genius. Stylish, slick, gorgeously-shot, and deep enough to warrant post-film discussion that makes you feel smart. It's brilliant and a whole lot of fun.

To round out a Top 10 list...

Best Movie I Never Saw But It Literally Haunts My Dreams:
The Human Centipede. I've had several nightmares about this movie, even before I watched the trailer. I'm obsessed with it, I've read everything about it, but I can't watch it. Actually, after watching the unedited 25-minute clip of Daniel Tosh explaining the movie, I think I could watch it some day. In the daytime, with a couple friends and a couple drinks. I think it's the kind of movie you can make fun of, view as a comedy... and hope it won't continue to haunt your dreams after......

Baloney & Cereal Twenty-Ten Sillies: TV

I still have a few movies to see before I make a Best Of list for 2010. But I can start with my true love, television. Do I watch a lot of crappy TV or something? Because I can only think of 6 stand-outs. And yes, I realize I need to start watching Breaking Bad. It's building up on my DVR, promise.

Best Shows:

6. Lost. With my lack of long-term memory, it's hard to believe this show was still on in 2010. But May 2010 brought us an amazing season finale. It was all I could have asked for - I thought it was perfect for this show. And I cried my balls off.

5. Being Human. I picked this last year too and begged America not to remake it. America ignored me, and an American version is set for 2011. I'll give it a chance, but no way can it be as amazing as the British version. You really have to do yourself a favor and check it out.

4. The Walking Dead. I watched it for the zombies - and there were plenty - but it was also this great study of different characters, and what happens to people when the world falls apart around them.

3. Community. Team Troy. This show is always hysterical, sometimes genuinely touching, and does meta jokes better than any show ever. It's just a good time. Watch the paintball episode immediately.

2. Mad Men. 2010 was The Year of Mad Men for me, as I finally got caught up. It's just so amazing. I view it as a comedy most of the time, because the things they got away with in the '60s are hysterical. I laugh at everything inappropriate. And I really loved this season -- especially the Peggy/Don-centric episode and the finale. The writing on this show is like poetry. P.S.: Betty Draper is a giant C. Team Sally.

1. Fringe. Sigh. This year brought us the Great Peter Reveal and episodes that alternated between Universes. The show is about bizarre things while still being focused on real (and tragic) family relationships. I. Love. It.

Worst Show I Can't Stop Watching:
The Event. I watch it solely to make fun of it now, and to yell at my television whenever That Annoying Prick Sean and His Dumb Girlfriend take up space. I still swear it could have potential, but it tries to prove me wrong on a weekly basis.

Worst Show That Pisses Me Off:
I loved Chuck so much back in the day, but I just have not been vibing with it this last half of the year at all. I still watch it for the brief moments of happiness it contains (read: Morgan and Lester), and in the hopes it gets better. I think the whole Chuck/Sarah relationship is a bust. I hate the relationshippy show it has become.

Worst Show I Don't Watch: Glee. I haven't watched a second of it since the series premiere, and I still hate that show more than any other. Die.

Oooo wait. If I add Tosh.0 to the Best Of list, then I'll have a list of 10 shows, which is pretty close to those accepted-by-society Top 10 lists. And Tosh.0 is the funniest show on TV. Huzzah!

Baloney & Cereal Oh-Nine Sillies: TV is My Best Friend

Best TV of 2009:

8. Curb Your Enthusiasm – It was so good this year. The Seinfeld reunion was amazingly perfect, along with the usual inappropriate antics of Larry David.

7. Community – I started watching for Joel McHale – and he’s great – but OMG those supporting characters!? How amazing are Abed (Danny Pudi) and Troy (Donald Glover)? AMAZING! And I wish Senor Chang taught me Spanish.

6. Parks & Recreation – I didn’t love this show last year, but this season has been great!! Louis C.K. as the cop boyfriend and Chris Pratt as Andy really helped put it over the top. Really, the whole cast is pretty fabulous – Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman, and Aubrey Plaza... OMG Aubrey Plaza kills me as April the intern.

5. Being Human – This reminds me that the show is coming back soon! You can wait to catch it on BBC America or try to find *cough*alternative*cough* methods of viewing it. It’s a great British show about werewolf, ghost, and vampire roommates. It’s hot and funny and fabulous!! (Dear America: Please don't remake this. You'll ruin it.)

4. So You Think You Can Dance – Still the best place to go for real (and amazing) talent.

3. The Soup – And not just because I went to a taping this year. It’s always great, and it’s not just about Joel – I love me some Mankini and the other random little “characters” – they’re real to me, dammit!

2. Chuck – Edged out by Fringe this year, but really they’re equal in my mind. Just depends on if you’re going for tragic/scary/fun or comedic/fun. All the characters are fabulous. I bought my Five Dollar Footlong and helped to get the show saved. Can’t wait til this comes back this month!

1. Fringe – I can’t be more in love with a show if I tried. I love every single damn character and Walter Bishop breaks my damn heart on a weekly damn basis.

Worst Show I Can’t Stop Watching: Flash Forward. For a second there, it got better, but then it went back to sucking. The main problem is that I don’t care about the characters – seriously, they could all die and I’d move on with my life. The flash forwards are too damn repetitive, especially when I don’t care about the characters!!

Worst Shows Period: Life on Mars (Never. Americanize. Anything. Brilliant.) and Prison Break (a show I didn’t even recognize toward the end, it had fallen so hard).

Baloney & Cereal Oh-Nine Sillies: Movies

Because my Best Of lists are nothing if not arbitrary, I'll do the Top Seven movies of the year and the Bottom Two - thereby adding up to 9 for 2009.

7. Fast & Furious – Everything you could ask for in a Fast & Furious movie. Homo-eroticism, fast cars... yep, that's about it.

6. Star Trek – Chock full of entertainment from start to finish, even if you’re not into sci-fi. Lots of hotness, too.

5. The Hangover – Definitely the best comedy of the year. It’s fun, funny, and features a naked Asian dude – not sure what more you’re looking for.

4. The Hurt Locker – Amazingly tense and well-performed.

3. Up In The Air – It’s the kind of movie you like even more when you start thinking about it. I really loved the ambiguity, and the 3 stars in it are amazing.

2. District 9 – Original, believable, groundbreaking. Screw Avatar, this was the best sci-fi movie of the year. Sharlto Copley is the Best Actor of the year too, dammit.

1. Inglourious Basterds – It really is Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece, and that’s saying a lot. I can watch this movie over and over and see something new to love about it every time. And I do. Just when I thought Christoph Waltz (Oscar or die!) was the best thing in the movie, Brad Pitt cracks me up. Just when I thought it was all about the dialogue, the framing of a shot slays me. This movie makes me want to learn German in the worst way possible. Hands down the best (and most fun) movie of 2009.

And the 2 worst movies (that I saw) of 2009:

G.I. Joe – No. Just no.

New Moon. I’m getting sleepy just thinking about it. I went for the laughs, and there were some for sure, but mostly it was just a slow, boring, dreary sequel to a slow, boring, dreary movie. But with 300% more abs.

Baloney & Cereal Oh-Eight Sillies: TV

Now television I can do. Television can be viewed while you sit disabled on a sofa for 2 months. Thank god for television.

Best TV of 2008

1. Chuck - Because I watch or DVR 4 shows on Monday nights. And this is always the show that I watch last on Tuesday evenings - because it is the one that is guaranteed to be good. And it makes me happy. I can't think of a single character I don't love to pieces.

2. Fringe - I've been rewatching the season on Hulu this week. God it's good. And although the "freaks of the week" and the larger conspiracy are interesting things, it's the characters that really make this show. Mostly Pacey and his father. They are so well played, I just want to hug the TV screen.

3. Pushing Daisies - So sad that this show is canceled. It's another just plain feel-good show. It's witty and wry, with a fairy-tale feel, the dialogue is so smart and quick, and again these characters are fun. Mostly Emerson Cod. Oh how I will miss seeing him every week.

4. 30 Rock - The goddamned funniest show on television. Only this show would make a Lemon Party reference (Google if you must; NSFW). Liz Lemon is the woman I want to be, she's perfect in every way. Alec Baldwin is amazing. Again, just great dialogue and characters.

5. The Office - A goddamned close second. Toby came back. Yay!

6. So You Think You Can Dance - I need to get my leg fixed so that I can dance along when this show returns this summer. It's infectious and has people with real talent (!) and I love it.

7. Heroes - For all of its faults, it's still a fun show with great characters. I pretty much am committed to drinking the Kool-Aid with this show. I don't over-think, I just go with the flow.

8. Lost - Definitely looking forward to its imminent return. The freighter characters they added this year were actually interesting! And of course it was one hell of a cliffhanger.

Worst TV of 2008

American Idol and Big Brother. Never again.

Baloney & Cereal Oh-Eight Sillies: Movies

I feel like any Top Movies of the Year List I do is woefully inadequate because I've missed so much these past two months. There are a handful of movies that I'm sure are great, but I can't get out to the theater to watch them. So I'll just have to make do with the ones I did see. In order to make it 8 for oh-eight, I'll do Top Five and Bottom Three.

Best Movies of 2008

1. Iron Man - I'm actually putting this movie ahead of the next, though it was very close. Robert Downey, Jr. is so amazing, he grounds the movie in such realism that you totally buy everything that happens. Love it.

2. The Dark Knight - This ended up in second place because of glaring flaws that couldn't be overlooked. The who-will-blow-up-the-other-boat scene -- it just rings false to me and bothers me more the more I watch it. Christian Bale's gravelly, unnecessary whisper. But those are small things when considering the big picture - and the Joker, Two-Face, and Commissioner Gordon.

3. Tropic Thunder - Hilarious. And for as good as Robert Downey, Jr. is (once again), it's Jack Black who steals the movie. And dammit, if it isn't the only Tom Cruise movie I have ever or will ever like!

4. Burn After Reading - Funny, quirky, a great return to Fargo form for the Coen Brothers. Brad Pitt and George Clooney are hysterical, the situations and characters are absurd, and it had me laughing even hours later.

5. Step-Brothers - Apparently, I really kept things light this year. All of the serious dramas come out at the end of the year, so maybe that's why I didn't see many. This movie is hilarious and destined to be a comedy classic, and I really just have one word to say: balls.

Worst Movies of 2008

1. The Happening - No words for how disappointing this was. Ridiculous, pointless -- oh look, I found two words!

2. Semi-Pro - Again, a disappointment. Whereas Step-Brothers is a classic Will Ferrell film, this one is just plain unfunny.

3. Max Payne - Disappointed yet again! Damn these marketing folks for making movies look good with their fancy trailers, music, guns, and biceps. Boring and dull.

31 December 2007

Baloney & Cereal Oh-Seven Sillies: Movies

Best of the Year

10. The Kingdom. Maybe people thought it was a war movie and so they stayed away. But it's a great action movie. During the last act, I couldn't move a muscle. That makes it beat out Sweeney Todd for inclusion on the list. Plus I wanted to pick something you don't typically see on Best Of lists.
9. Transformers. Because it's fun, people! It doesn't get much bigger than trucks and planes transforming into battling robots. Unfortunately, the DVD is dead to me since it's not on Blu-Ray. Asses.
8. I Am Legend. I love movies that stay with me for a few days, and this one definitely did. A great portrayal of solitude, but also scary as hell. Deserves to be seen on the big screen.
7. Zodiac. I love me some David Fincher and I love me some serial killing. Dark and haunting, it really puts you back into that time.
6. 300. Amazing visuals. And if you know the graphic novel you appreciate them even more. It's like the comic was brought to life. And it's a bloody good time.
5. Grindhouse. Another bloody good time. Tragically, the split-release of the DVDs takes away from the experience you got in the theater, which is what made it so cool. The DVDs are dead to me until they are combined and I can turn my living room into a Grindhouse.
4. Juno. Funny and sweet, Ellen Page gives the best performance of the year.
3. No Country for Old Men. So well-done. Just quality, quirky Coen Brothers entertainment.
2. 3:10 to Yuma. And I allegedly don't like Westerns! The performances were amazing, and it's another movie that really stays with you.
1. Superbad. Two best friends played by two hilarious guys (my boyfriends, Michael Cera and Jonah Hill). A wacky nickname. Two insane cops. And one little bottle of spermicidal lube. An instant comedy classic. A great, LOL comedy, and ultimately a great story.

Worst of the Year

I try not to see bad movies, but once in a while I either get fooled or bored, or feel like it is my wifely duty.
3. Beowulf. Dull waste of time.
2. The Heartbreak Kid. Couldn't be any less funny.
1. Spider-Man 3. Ugh. Singing and dancing. Emo Peter Parker. Fugly Kirsten Dunst. I'm officially over these movies.

Baloney & Cereal Oh-Seven Sillies: Television

Best of the Year

7. So You Think You Can Dance. Imagine this: talented contestants producing works of art. It really makes you think you CAN dance.

6. Project Runway. Ditto. And with more gays.

5. Dateline: To Catch a Predator. Chris Hansen is my hero, these low-lifes are my entertainment.

4. Pushing Daisies. Quirky, adorable, and funny as hell. The best new show of the year.

3. Human Giant. Take the three funniest men on the planet: Rob Huebel, Paul Scheer, and Aziz Ansari. Hilarity ensues. This show is coming back, right?

2. 30 Rock. A show full of inside jokes. When you get them you feel like one of the cool kids. There's not an unfunny person in the cast, and it's the most consistently LOL show on television.

1. Heroes. What did you expect? The beauty of this list is that it includes the second half of last season. So while I can admit that a couple episodes this season were rough, the show eventually redeemed itself and last year was great stuff. It's Number One because it's still the only show I obsess over and have to watch live.

Worst of the Year

3. Kid Nation. If I wanted to look at dirty kids and hear them shriek, I'd have some.

2. Bionic Woman. Talk about a downslide. It suffered from behind-the-scenes changes that made it horrifically bad after the first episode. I only hung in for three.

1. 24. Just because it fell so far. I've decided to forget last season ever happened. It was all a bad dream as far as I'm concerned. I need the writers' strike to end so I can have this show back and it can redeem itself.

Baloney & Cereal Oh-Seven Sillies: Books

LOL. That's a good one, dude. Books. Like anyone reads those anymore.

Baloney & Cereal Oh-Seven Sillies: Music

I'll start the ubiquitous, requisite Look Back at 2007 with Music.

I don't download many songs, and I download even fewer complete albums, but my general awesomeness still qualifies me to make picks for the best music of 2007. Music that I blast in my car when it comes on the radio. Music that I'd put on a mixtape called "Now That's What I Call Sillies."

Album of the Year: Linkin Park, Minutes to Midnight. At first listen, I was disappointed because it is less electronic/hard than the other albums. But the emo-punk teenage boy in me came to obsess over its moodiness. Angsty as hell and I love it.
See "In Pieces": Telling me to go, but hands beg me to stay. Your lips say that you love. Your eyes say that you hate. There's truth in your lies, doubt in your faith. What you build you lay to waste.... All I've got's what you didn't take.

Runner-up: Timbaland, Shock Value. See especially, "Apologize", "The Way I Are".

Top Songs:

Fall Out Boy
- "Thnks fr the Mmrs", "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race". Fun pop-rock. Emo forever!

Finger Eleven - "Paralyzer". Best Drums of 2007

Justin Timberlake - "What Goes Around...Comes Around". Technically released January 8 so it makes the list. Still love this song!

Rihanna featuring Jay-Z - "Umbrella" (ella ella ella, ay ay ay). I can't escape it, so I have to admit it. Plus, it samples GarageBand, which makes it even more awesome. Who else could do that?

Plain White T's - "Hey There Delilah". Because I can imagine drunks everywhere singing the chorus at a bar. Because even though I'm not drunk, I just can't resist singing "Oh it's what you do to me" out loud every time I hear it.
