Lost Has Been Found

It was nice to have Lost back, even if it's not the Lost I used to loooove. Watching that hour-long recap before the premiere was a mistake, because it made me remember how truly awesome the show used to be. It was so scary I wouldn't watch it alone, there were mysterious things crashing through the forest, and the Locke-was-in-a-wheelchair reveal?! That was the Greatest Reveal in the History of Television. These days it's just people bitching at each other on an island.

They're sticking to the new "flash forward" format instead of flashbacks. So we can try to piece together what will happen, which adds something nice to the show. We know the survivors are referred to as the "Oceanic 6" - so far we know the survivors are Jack, Kate, Hurley, and possibly one other person who dies (if it's not Hurley). Hurley ends up back in a mental hospital haunted by visions of Charlie, who tells him, "They need you." Hurley is visited by Jack, checking to see if he's "going to tell." Hurley says, "It wants us to go back." And he's also visited by Daniels from The Wire, who asks, "Are they still alive?" So it's back to the same old Lost - little things that may or may not mean anything that you may or may not find out about before the series ends.

I hate Jack. I mean passionately hate Jack. Somewhere in the last couple seasons he became a tremendously pompous, self-righteous asshole. The one thing this show had going for it was that Jack could die. But now that we know he survives all hope for that is lost. I'd like to see the stats on Jack's errors. I think he's been wrong 98% of the time. And being wrong is of course always preceded by blanket statements like, "No one's listening to you, John!" Oh really? How about Hurley and half the people go with John. (Why did Desmond and Sayid stay with Jack when they knew it wasn't Penny's boat coming for them?)

But in the end, Jack is usually right. He bellows, it turns out he's wrong, but then eventually it turns out he's right. He's Saint Jack and the writers love him.
