Two more episodes ever ever ever. Mike actually says we shouldn't bother watching this show anymore if it's not going to wrap-up neatly. I say he's made me watch it this long, he's not getting off that easy. It does make it easier, knowing I don't have to watch this for much longer....
Leila's dumb hybrid ass has altered the Spanish Flu virus so that it will spread the way the aliens want it to. But Sophia seems to be having a change of heart. For the 15th time.
That Annoying Prick Sean and Vicky are driving and bitching about something. They're tracking down... the courier's helper I guess? Hell if I know, I always feel like I lose time when watching this show. Alien Asian Hottie and Sterling are there looking for the same dude. So now we have Team Awesome vs. Team Suck. Stay away from the only awesome things on this show, goddamn you! Team Suck fills Team Awesome in on the Spanish Flu plan and then they all pick through the dude's trash. Team Suck is already dragging my men down....
Sophia has a good plan for spreading the disease - through supermarkets, currency, and Dulles Airport. We find out the Aliens were here first and think they're just taking back that which is rightfully theirs - the Earth. They start transporting the kegs of Spanish Flu.
President Underwood wakes up from his coma just as the First Lady is giving President Asshole a good talking to. She was so just about to smack him into the next century. The First Lady brings President Underwood up to speed (Sterling/Simon saved him) and then he calls Sterling, who brings him even more up to speed (President Asshole working with Sophia/Spanish Flu).
That Annoying Prick Sean hacks his way into the NSA satellites so they can track the dude (starting from a gas station receipt). It doesn't take long for them to find his location, which is the new alien hangout. As they drive there, Simon is all, "Hey, is that an ancient scroll in your glove compartment?"
Sophia orders Leila executed to put her out of her Spanish Flu misery. She slips her restraints as the doctor is about to inject her, and then Sean arrives. Leila stays in her plastic bubble - she's infected after all. Oh no, I'm sorry, let me put it how she did: "They put it in me." Jesus, this bitch is dumb. Also, that's what she said.
Hey I have a question - why would the aliens have put Leila in her plastic bubble? They're immune to the Spanish Flu, what the hell would they care if they were exposed? Oh right - plot device. We have to endure a scene of these 2 idiots talking to each other through the plastic. PUKE!
President Underwood insists on going to the White House and busts in on President Asshole in the Oval Office. "Get the hell out of my office." BOOYAH! President Asshole is all, "You have to be proved to be capable and you're a hot mess, go screw."
Simon threatens the alien doctor with a drill to the head, which is pretty cool, and she gives up the computer password so now Team Awesome can see the virus distribution plans. What - Sean couldn't hack it? I guess he was busy.
That Alien Array Thing powers up, communicating with the home planet.
If there's a god, the finale will only be one hour long.

NBC Generally Sucks
But I'll give these 2 shows a shot and see how badly they can screw them up....
First, Grimm - which kind of does look like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, minus Buffy and the high school, but with the same kind of demon-next-door vibe.
And then Awake which looks troubling, depressing, and hella intriguing. The trailer kind of blew my mind a little. But I know there's got to be some way they'll screw it up. Looking forward to finding out how they do it.

Alcatraz: I'm In
I don't know what this show is about, or how it can sustain itself. But I'm obsessed with Alcatraz -- it's literally my Favorite Place on Earth. So I'll watch it. Plus Sam Neill! I'm in for the Fall!

TV News
If you consider casting for a TV show a spoiler, I don't want to know you and you can move on. They just announced an addition to next season on Fringe and I couldn't be happier!!!
I am soooo happy about this, because I love Lincoln Lee. Now the question is which Lincoln Lee we get, but whatever - I'll take him in any form.
And in news I'm not happy about?
This show is 2 years past its expiration date, at least at the rate it's been going. If they can switch back to the way Seasons 1 and 2 were, that'd be fabulous. More Buy More, more Morgan, more funny, less relationshippy. I assume Chuck and Sarah are getting married next week - that'll make for interesting TV next year. Not. I loved Chuck more than anything in the beginning. But that show has disappointed me for too long. It's joyless.

Sources confirm to TVLine exclusively that Seth Gabel — who has recurred the last two seasons as Bolivia’s “Over There” colleague, Lincoln Lee — will return in Season 4 as a full-fledged series regular.

Escape artist Chuck, which has successfully cheated cancellation for the past two years, will be coming back to fight again next season. I hear a deal is being finalized for a 13-episode order to the NBC spy dramedy.

Guess there's no hope for a Republican/Democrat union after all....

Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife, Maria Shriver, have separated, with Shriver moving out of their Brentwood mansion while the two determine the next step in their 25-year marriage.
Shriver has been residing apart from the actor-turned-politician for the last few weeks. The former first couple confirmed the separation in a joint statement released Monday after questions from The Times.
"This has been a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us," the statement read. "After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion and prayer, we came to this decision together. At this time, we are living apart while we work on the future of our relationship.

The Event
From one of the greatest shows to one of the worst. Hold me!
Michael's dead, so there's some good news. Too bad he didn't take Leila with him. Alien Asian Hottie is on the way to deliver the Poison Splenda Antidote to the Semi-President.
That Annoying Prick Sean and Vicky are on the road again, somehow, and trying to save the world from a Spanish Flu outbreak, tracking the GPS on the infected lungs. That's a ridiculous sentence, huh? They track the lungs to a mall, where the bad guys have also conveniently left behind blueprints of the mall's ventilation system. Oh noes! Sean runs to the roof of the Busiest. Mall. Ever. and has a lame shootout with the people loading the lungs into the HVAC system. It takes a while to get lungs properly loaded, OK?
Simon brings the antidote to Sterling, telling him that he's split from Sophia and wants to save the President. They head out to get with the First Lady, their only hope of getting to President Underwood. In the meantime, President Asshole tells the First Lady that Sterling and Simon are responsible for poisoning her husband. She tells him where they are.
That Annoying Prick Sean and Vicky find the lung-bomb, which has been set with a 3-minute timer. Because why disperse Spanish Flu now when you can wait 3 minutes to do it? Sean thinks he knows how to disarm a bomb, and he does so by shooting it. But wait - that's not really the lung bomb! Or at least not the whole thing. It was released on a bus so that the Aliens could continue their evaluation. They determine that the virus should first be released in a bridge species - a hybrid. Leila. Yes please! Release the virus in Leila!!! Now why does it have to be released in a hybrid? It seemed to do a pretty good job of killing people as-is. Oh who the hell knows. Funny how the kind of BS I'll accept on Fringe only irritates me with this show. It's all in the quality, people.
President Asshole orders the bombing of Sterling and Simon - no really! They don't call him President Asshole for nothing. It comes as no shock to anyone who watches The Event -- Sterling had gotten through to the First Lady earlier with a phone call and told her the real deal. So the location that she gave President Asshole isn't real - just an empty warehouse. And the First Lady gets the antidote to President Underwood. And President Asshole is now sweating his ass off. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Fringe
Season finale time! Hold me! I'm scared!
It's 2026 at Fringe Division. Future Olivia's in charge and her niece is a new agent. And Future Olivia and Future Peter are Future Married! I'm liking Future Peter's graying hair. Future Olivia can do telekinesis like it's blinking. She rules!
The opening credits are black! I was wondering what they'd do with those. Love it.
The terrorists who attacked the New World Trade Center blow up an opera house, claiming they are trying to accelerate The End of Days. Peter goes to see Walter to get some information on the bombs used. Future Walter is hairy and crazy-looking and locked up in prison for causing the Fringe events/destroying a universe.
Future Senator Broyles has a milky eye that makes me want to puke. Peter gets Walter cleaned up and temporarily released so he can do some investigating in his old, sadly-empty lab. When Walter and Olivia are reunited it's super sweet - he picks her up and swings her around.
The terrorists are working with Future Walternate - he's trying to get the 2 Universes to merge.
Peter and Olivia drink boxed wine and eat canned steak. Nevermind - the future sucks!
The day the Peter Bishop Doomsday Machine was triggered was the day the Other Universe was destroyed and a wormhole developed in Central Park. The terrorists head into the ambered-off wormhole area and Walternate leaves a clue for Peter to find him. Peter (and everyone else) knows that Walternate is in Our Universe - he came here to save his Universe and got stuck when the Other Universe was destroyed. Future Walternate is salty as hell.
But the Walternate Peter is talking to is a holographic projection. The real Walternate is too busy shooting Olivia straight through the forehead!!!!! Noooooo!
In the future, we give people Viking burials - light their coffins on fire and push them out into the river. Or at least that's how Olivia's funeral goes.
Walter continues his investigation and somehow figures out he can time travel. Or at least that he's the one who sent the Machine parts back to the past before. And this time Peter can go back in time and undo the last 15 years. My nose bleeds from the explanation, but I go with it, because this is Fringe.
We go back to the Present where Peter's still in the Machine. Then to the Other Universe, where their softspots are getting worse. Walternate wants Fauxlivia to help shut off the machine. Then to Our Universe. Then Peter merges the 2 universes. Like, the 2 Walters and 2 Olivias are standing in the same room!!! Is this permanent? Yes please!
Peter starts explaining that the Universes need to work together, that both teams need to work together to survive. And then he disappears. The Observers are outside, and say that no one remembers Peter, that to them he never existed. No!!!! No wantie permanent anymore!!!
This Week's Code: NO MORE. No - I do want more. That was crazy and cool and I can't wait to see what happens next season!!

Thor

I really liked Thor, and the more I think about it, the more I liked it. Now I'll say that going in to the movie I was highly skeptical. The prospect of some Viking God wasn't appealing to me. I like my superheroes best when they're grounded in some realism, like with Batman and Iron Man. But Thor and Green Lantern are giving me some douchechills because of how alien they are. When something's set entirely in some strange world or outer space it freaks me out.
So anyway, I wasn't expecting to enjoy the movie as much as I did. But it works. Sure, the Viking Universe Whateverthehell scenes are kinda weird, but they pulled it off. When Thor's on Earth he's huge and built and hot if you go for that blond Nordic thing. His brother Loki was very cool too. I also was all WTF with the hammer, but it was awesome. I love how it's kind of magnetic. Cool. And the movie, as with all these Marvel films, doesn't take itself too seriously and winks at how crazy the stuff is.
The kicker? Hawkeye! I was so excited to see Jeremy Renner make his cameo. And it was a decent-sized one too. Hawkeye looks like a genuine military badass - and a smartass who gets a great line already. Can't wait for The Avengers!
Also? Serious Girl Crush on Kat Dennings. Serious.

Crazy Baby Names Part 454

No name compares to Declan, but I actually like these effed-up names. OK, maybe not Moroccan (nor the inspiration - weird), but I like the nickname Roc. But for some reason I'm really feeling the name Monroe for a little girl. Good thing I don't have kids I guess.
Mariah Carey and her husband Nick Cannon have finally revealed the names of their twins who were born in Los Angeles on Saturday.
Their son is named Moroccan Scott Cannon, with the nickname "Roc". Scott is Nick’s middle name, as well as his grandmother’s maiden name. The top tier of Mariah’s New York City apartment is called the Moroccan Room, because of the Moroccan-inspired decor.
Their daughter’s name is Monroe Cannon. Mariah's rep says she does not have a middle name because Mariah herself does not have one. Monroe was named after Marilyn Monroe, who has been an inspiration to Mariah her whole life.

The Event
Vice President Asshole is being sworn in while President Underwood is rushed into surgery. I'm not interested in staring at Presidential Nipples. He crashes, but ends up in a coma. Now-President Asshole tells his team that he'll open up diplomatic negotiations with the aliens.
Sterling is covertly continuing his investigation of President Asshole, including sending his poisoned-coffee-stained shirt cuff off for analysis. There are traces of a bio-catalyst - something we don't even have the science to create - on the sleeve. Oh snap - sounds like Alien Poison Splenda to me!
Alien Asian Hottie is still strapped to his bed. It's unclear whether they let him get up to pee. He beats up a guard but doesn't escape. Sophia wants him killed, and orders Michael to do it. Michael only pretends to kill him, and helps AAH escape. They plan to find the antidote to the Alien Poison Splenda.
The Alien Courier is on the way to America with his briefcase of Spanish Flu. That Annoying Prick Sean and Vicky are hot on his tail, and buy tickets on the same flight. They sure are well traveled. It doesn't take long for Sean to spot his prime suspect, of course. That Sean is a brilliant master of assumption and coincidence.
Sean and Vicky jump the courier, but there's only cocaine in his briefcase. Jesus, what if they had unleashed the Spanish Flu by opening the case? What a bunch of donks!
Sterling confronts President Asshole, and awesomely tells him he's just being used as Sophia's pawn. President Asshole fires him. Željko Ivanek is the bomb. He deserves way better than this show. In fact, in Googling his name for the proper spelling I just found out he won an Emmy for Damages. Hell yeah - he was awesome on that show!
Sean has Vicky contact someone she can trust at Homeland Security to let them know there's a plane full of WMD coming. The plane is diverted and gets a jet escort, but Sophia gets President Asshole to call it off, what with him being her pawn and all. Dumbass.
The Two Idiots figure out that the Alien Courier is a flight attendant. They catch up with her as she's handing it off, and hilariously fight with her and the other guy, but they're pwned. We're supposed to think it's because Vicky lurves Sean and didn't want to shoot him. Excuse me while I puke my guts out at the thought that 2 chicks could be in love with this douche.
As Alien Asian Hottie, Leila, and Michael escape the compound they come under gunfire. Michael earns a gutshot. Leila spares Simon the agony of having to be with her alone and stays behind to watch her father die. Simon runs off to take the antidote to President Underwood.

Ann Curry is going to be replacing Meredith Vieira on The Today Show. It was an announcement that was expected, and it has been made official today. After five years, Vieira is leaving the popular morning show, and leaving her post to Curry, who has been an NBC correspondent for fourteen years.
Instead of hiring someone new, The Today Show is going to play musical chairs with their already talented reporters. "Natalie Morales, 38, is set to step into Ann's role, and MSNBC anchor Savannah Guthrie, 39, will be the 9 AM anchor," Hollywood Life reports.

Fast Five

Fast Five was awesome! It had everything I could ask for in a Fast & Furious movie and everything I need in a fun movie in general - in other words, it had porn of the bicep, tight tee shirt, gun, car, and barely-contained homoerotic variety.
The movie brings back everyone - the Asian guy from that one Fast & Furious movie, the black guy from that one Fast & Furious movie, the other black guy from that Fast & Furious movie, and Bigger Vin Diesel a/k/a The Rock. Cars. Guns. Big men beating each other up and nearly making out. What's not to love? If you go for this kind of thing, you won't be disappointed.

Fringe
In which Fringe tries to win back the #1 spot in my heart that Justified stole from it.
Astrid lures Walter out of standing watch at Peter's bedside with the promise of tapioca pudding. Olivia takes Sam Weiss and his now-awesome haircut to see the Peter Bishop Doomsday Machine. He has some conveniently-unpublished pages that will help them bypass the Machine's force field and allow Peter to enter. They visit the Great Tomb of Sam Weisses Past to get a box for an "In case of emergency, break glass" kind of fix. Then they head to a museum to get the key. The key opens the box and inside is a drawing of Olivia, similar to the one of Peter and the Machine.
Meanwhile, we've got freak lightning storms hitting the Northeast. The events are occurring between the locations of the Machine in Our Universe and The Other. Walter wants to move the Machine to Liberty Island so that it's at the same location as it is on the Other Side; that will slow down the rip in the Universe.
Peter wakes up alone in the hospital, since everyone else is out investigating. He can't remember who he is, and walks out, hails a taxi and asks for 42nd & Lexington -- in NYC, and he's in Massachusetts. The cabbie is happy to oblige once Peter produces a credit card.
Walter figures out (somehow, because he's just brilliant, OK?) that Olivia needs to control the Machine from the Other Universe with her mind, and that she can do it through the Otherworldly Typewriter. Poor Olivia has a hard time working it, even with some fatherly coaching from Walter. Then they get the call that Peter is missing (he had also left a note at the hospital - "I'm going home").
Peter has made it to New York, where he is drawn into a pawn shop and some old coins. He thinks he's Other Peter (or at least living in the Other Universe), because he heads to Liberty Island to see his father, the Secretary of Defense. Olivia and Walter go to meet him, but he's clearly confused.
Back at the lab, Astrid hears the Otherworldly Typewriter typing on its own. The message? "Be a better man than your father," which was the phrase Olivia was concentrating on. So she's just on some kind of delay, that's all. It's like a time zone.
So now they've got the Machine at Liberty Island and Olivia feels more confident about her ability to telekinetically work it. She starts concentrating and the Machine powers down. Olivia tells Peter she loves him before he goes into the Machine. Aw, you crazy kids are cute but I still don't buy in on their relationship.
Peter latches himself into the machine and wakes up in what looks like a war-torn New York City. He's got a uniform on, and sees a 9/11 memorial has been built -- and it was dedicated in 2021. According to the preview for next week, he's 15 years in the future. Holy crap! That's pretty cool. You packed a lot of stuff into this episode, Fringe. But you're still #2.
This Week's Code: MULTI.

According to the preview for next week, he's 15 years in the future. Holy crap! That's pretty cool. You packed a lot of stuff into this episode, Fringe. But you're still #2.
This Week's Code: MULTI.
Good TV Exists and Stuff

I always feel like an asshole when I'm slow to catch on to shows. Then I feel like even more of an asshole when I'm blogging about crap like The Event when there's amazing TV out there. So I will now admit that I love Justified and Damages.
In the case of Damages, I've only seen through the first 2 episodes of Season 3, but it's great, in a crazy way. Damages really plays out like a 13-hour-long movie -- the plot flashes back and forth from future to present and lasts all season. It's over-the-top in the way that everyone is a liar or out to kill someone, and nothing is as it seems, but that's what makes it fun - its insanity.
In the case of Justified, it is the Greatest Show on Television. Period. Raylan Givens is an iconic character in the same way that Jack Bauer was. The first season was great, but this season has been criminally great. This week's penultimate episode just solidified that. I think it was the best one yet, and that's saying a lot, because I tend to say that every week. The show just continually one-ups itself. It was one of the quieter episodes, action-wise, and maybe that's what made it amazing. It was a master class is great television. Maybe the best episode of TV ever ever ever.
The dialogue in the show is amazing, it's like poetry. And there's always a wry sense of humor that I love. The good guys are amazing, the bad guys (Boyd!) are amazing. It's not unusual for me to rewind a scene simply to listen to it again, and I've seen every episode at least twice (the advantage of 13-episode seasons). Next week is the season finale and I don't know what I'll do without it. (Besides catch up on Damages and Breaking Bad.)
If Emmy season comes around and Justified doesn't get nods for writing, directing, best drama, and Timothy Olyphant, that will be me, jumping off a bridge.
And P.S.: I'm Team Winona.
P.P.S.: My brother-in-law has good taste.

X-Men: First Class
I'm all in on this movie. This is the international trailer which for some reason is better than the U.S. trailer. I thought America was the greatest country in the world? I can't get enough of the music used in this - gotta hunt it down. This movie better be good! It has Michael Fassbender and Rose Byrne - how can it be bad? I'm geeking out over the classic X-Men suits too!

The Event
From the depths of Siberia comes... a mummy. And from the depths of that mummy comes... guts. It's all well-preserved and makes me want to puke. Who wants ribs? Seriously - looks like a goddamned Chili's in here!
Now to the White House and the Case of the Poisoned Splenda! It's kind of fun watching the VP sweat it out while the President makes his coffee. One sip and he starts speaking like that reporter after the Grammys, and then hits the ground.
Doctors say President Underwood suffered a stroke. The President tells Sterling that he could see something in the VP's eyes before he passed out - he doesn't trust him, and doesn't want him taking the Oath. Sterling sets out to try to prove the VP is a dick. Turns out, the VP is a dick AND a wuss - puking his guts out in the bathroom, feeling guilty.
Back in the Land of Suck, Leila's Daddy kills her big black bodyguard to prevent him from turning her in to Sophia. Wraps him in a trash bag and everything. And on the French Train of Suck, Sean Googles the name Leila gave him and determines it's the name of a ship docked in Siberia.... the ship where a dude's conducting his autopsy of that mummy, and is so inept that he slices his suit open, and is exposed to whatever the mummy's got.
Meanwhile, the President was speaking 3 seconds ago, but I guess a dude goes unconscious and they start talking about pulling the plug and invoking the 25th Amendment. Jesus, they move quickly.
Damn, but that European transportation is really convenient - Sean and Vicky are now in Siberia, boarding the ship like Somali pirates. They look into a cabin to see the crew dead. Good thing there are a couple biohazard suits available nearby! They suit up and check out all the dead people, all lying in blood and vomit. Whatever that mummy has, it's no good.
A lone survivor on the ship tells them that the mummy's lungs - containing Spanish Flu - have been removed, and are being brought to the U.S. by a courier.
Sterling and the Chief of Staff watch surveillance tapes, figure out the coffee was poisoned, but the coffee stain's already being removed from the carpet. Too bad for them, they don't have any proof and the 25th Amendment proceedings begin. And too bad for Sterling he didn't see the coffee stain on his cuff until after they were over. We've got a new President!

Fringe
We start in the Other Universe, where the Peter Bishop Doomsday Machine is nearly ready. They're gonna run it off Peter's Baby's blood.
Our Universe: Sheep and locusts are acting strangely, and then there's a big rip in the sky. Sam Weiss is in his bowling alley (but why did Kevin Corrigan have to cut his crazy hair?) and knows something's wrong. Olivia wakes up in Peter's bed, only to be greeted by Walter wearing nothing but big, fuzzy slippers. (He always cooks breakfast naked on Tuesdays. Duh.)
The Team is summoned to the place where the sky ripped open - there's a big, black mark on the ground and the sheep and shepherds are gone. They determine that the Peter Bishop Doomsday Machine in Our Universe turned on at the same moment the vortex opened up. And more weird environmental/weather events are being reported as well - The Blight, like the Other Universe suffered.
Other Universe: Fringe Division picks up the energy coming off the Peter Bishop Doomsday Machine, and Fauxlivia asks Walternate if he has activated his weapon. She's worried about her Baby Daddy.
Our Universe: Peter thinks he'll be able to turn the machine off, just as he was able to power it up. Walter's worried he'll die - so worried that he drinks booze, nevermind the illegal drugs.
Olivia knows about the Other Universe's Early Warning system, so she works on a similar plan with Nina. Nina tells Olivia that Sam Weiss knows more about the machine, so Olivia sets off to find him. He's in a field, looking through to the Other Side and performing some ominous calculations.
Other Universe: Fauxlivia's baby is creepy as hell. He looks all waxy and fake. I don't like Other Universe Half Breeds!!! Fauxlivia leaves Lincoln with the kid and takes off to try to get Peter. I almost want her to die so we can have an Other Universe Sitcom where Lincoln and Charlie raise the kid together.
Our Universe: While Olivia tracks Sam, Walter and Peter work on their plan to have Peter essentially break the circuit in the Peter Bishop Doomsday Machine. Peter even gets a cool black Massive Dynamic jumpsuit to wear and everything! Walter, Broyles, and Astrid say their maybe-goodbyes and it's kind of breaking my heart a little. Go Brave Peter! He boards the machine like a goddamned astronaut, but as soon as he touches it, the electric current knocks him back, splitting open his face and throwing him to the ground.
They notify Olivia and she arrives to find Peter in a coma, though with no apparent brain trauma. Walter's in the chapel at the hospital, ready to break my heart some more. Sure enough, he's bargaining with god to forgive him and save Peter. Sam visits Olivia at the hospital, and now his haircut is growing on me. Yum. Sam Weiss is HOT.
Other Universe: Fauxlivia tries to force Brandon to cooperate at gunpoint, but she's unable to cross over when she tries. Now Walternate's got her locked in a cell. Can't have her interfering in his plans to destroy Our Universe.

The Event
Sophia and the Aliens are working on finding a weapon (have they mentioned this weapon before? Are they killing all of us with it?), and so they need a distraction. And the assassination of President Underwood would be a great distraction. Sophia calls the Vice President and offers him the chance to become President.
Shout-out to NBC for hiring a convicted felon - my man Lane Garrison from Prison Break. I actually do have to respect a guy who pleads guilty for killing someone while drunk. Keep up the good fight, kid - one line today, two tomorrow, then who knows....
Senator Madsen shares with the President her suspicions that the First Lady is an alien. She has a whole file on her to support it. The President's suspicious, and confronts his wife with the file. She comes clean - her parents were aliens -- Dominican aliens, that is. She looks like she's lying.
Leila is a cutter -- she slices her hand open on purpose so that she can leave the house. Not sure how you'd cut your palm like that when slicing an apple, but OK. She's brought to another house that serves as a makeshift hospital, where she sees Alien Asian Hottie tied to a bed. Ah, so it's a kinky hospital. AAH tells Leila that the aliens plan to find a weapon and exterminate mankind, and gives her a name and asks her to help. Oh, you beautiful idiot, she won't be of any help....
The VP meets with Sophia, who has for some reason changed into a slutty dress. What the hell? Think those big cougar cans are going to convince the old man? She offers him the chance to save the United States, to partner with the aliens once the human population is "substantially reduced". He just has to slip the President some poisoned Splenda for his coffee. Ugh.
Back at her house, Leila invites her big black bodyguard in for a drink. She takes his jacket, steals his phone, and goes to take a piss. She calls 9-1-1 but - shocker - isn't of much help, since she doesn't know where she's being held. "It's a housing development and there's woods." Thanks, bitch, that narrows it down. Her bodyguard finds her, fights her, and she somehow gets the upperhand on him and escapes.
That Annoying Prick Sean runs into the burning French building to save Vicky, but Hal Holbrook's waiting for them when they come out. He explains his whole "sentinel" deal to Sean - that he's here to protect humanity from the aliens. He also says that Sean's the key to saving us and stopping Sophia. Oh great. Hal Holbrook then does the one cool thing that's ever happened on this show - he shoots himself in the head!
Sean and Vicky run off into the hills of France with Hal Holbrook's scrolls and fake passports. Thank god there's a cell phone signal in those hills -- Leila gets through to Sean, tells him of the aliens' plans, and that they're looking for a weapon in Siberia.
Something big is pulled from the ground in Siberia, and the President's sweetener is switched - and there's your cliffhanger. Yawn.

Scream 4

The original Scream movie, I recently realized, is one of the films key to my development as a human being. I swear it was the first real scary movie I had seen, and I still love it. Every Halloween I watch horror movies, and either this past year or the year before it was a Scream marathon. The original is great, the 2nd is pretty damn close, the 3rd is a little ridiculous but still enjoyable. Scream 4 is really good, definitely better than the 3rd.
But it's really surreal to watch a movie where Sidney Prescott is the old one. I'm sorry, what? If she's the old one, then what does that make me? The movie was a bit been-there-done-that (it was a Scream movie through and through), but it's also been so long since we've seen a Scream movie that it felt outdated. If this movie had come out 7 or 8 years ago it might have made more sense. Now it just makes me feel old to be a fan of the franchise.
I enjoyed Scream 4 because it was good to see a Scream movie again, but it's not like it really changed things up much. Pretty standard kills and survivors - nothing terribly shocking. But I guess that's what makes it a Scream movie.
It's good, though really you should just rewatch the first one. Oh god I just had a horrible thought - they're going to remake it some day, aren't they? Probably some day soon.

Fringe
Walter's working on getting Bell out of Olivia, trying to transfer him into the body of some brain-dead fat dude in a bathtub of ice. It doesn't work out.
Olivia starts seizing, and Bell explains that only one consciousness can survive. He gives Olivia about a day before she's gone forever, so Bell needs to find a new host. They're going to try for a computer. Bring out the LSD!
Peter gets to trip along with his dad and Bell, so that he can go inside Olivia's mind and find her. Yeah, I just said that. This show! It's almost like a Matrix kind of thing, where Peter and Walter are together in the city of Olivia's mind. Tragically, my FOX station botches the feed and I miss the first scene, but the city they're in is Alternate New York. Peter and Walter are chased by the projections in Olivia's mind, because ripping off Inception is so hot right now.
They head to Bell's office to find Olivia. Bell's inside - only he's a cartoon. I'm guessing because they couldn't get Leonard Nimoy in person. So now we're in an animated Fringe universe. It's weird, and Animated Peter is fat and cross-eyed. There's a reason this show isn't animated, goddammit, and I want it back.
They determine that Olivia must be hiding in a safe place, and Peter suggests Jacksonville. The animated gang is attacked by animated zombies as they get away. I can only imagine what people who are just now tuning into the show are thinking.
Back at the lab, Broyles is fascinated by licorice - because he accidentally touched the leftover LSD. So poor Astrid has to babysit him while he trips balls. Boyles is smiling and laughing - and that's possibly the strangest thing I've ever seen on this show.
While en route to Jacksonville in a zeppelin, someone else appears and kicks Walter out of it. Animated Walter falls to his death, waking up Real Walter in the lab.
Animated Peter and Bell go to Olivia's childhood home on the Jacksonville military base. Peter opens the door and turns back to normal (thank god) and Olivia's there. As a child. Which is kind of creepy when Peter takes her hand and leaves.
Broyles is blowing bubbles in the lab when everyone regains consciousness. The transfer to the computer apparently didn't work, and Bell is gone, for the second time. Bell knew that the computer transfer wouldn't work, but he did it anyway to save Olivia. 10 bucks says a computer randomly pops on some day and starts typing out messages from Bell.
So remember the random animated dude who appeared on the zeppelin and attacked Walter? Well, Olivia has drawn him on a piece of paper. Peter asks who he is, and she says she's never seen him before, but "he's the man who's going to kill me." Sure, why not?
Honestly, I could have done without the animation. The beauty of the freaking show is the actors and when you can't see their faces it just doesn't hold the same weight. But I'll allow it for the weirdness factor.

Source Code

OK, that's more like it - a movie that lives up to my expectations. Source Code is Groundhog Day meets Inception. You've got Jake Gyllenhaal as part of an experiment where he travels back to re-live the final 8 minutes of a guy's life to try to solve who planted a bomb on the train that killed him, in order to prevent a second attack.
I liked it because it was a truly original science fiction film that was still small. No aliens or big space fights, you know? Just mind-bendy. There's definitely one glaring plothole that bothers me, but the movie as a whole requires suspension of disbelief, so I'll get over it. It's an enjoyable movie, and I like how the plots (both the one on the train and the one where Jake is discovering what he's a part of) unfolded. Smart, emotional, real sci-fi rules.

Hanna

I wanted to like Hanna. I really did. But I was disappointed, and I hate when a movie disappoints.
Have you seen the trailer? Then you've seen the movie. Just pad it with another 120 minutes or so. There's no major plot, there's no major character development. There's some good chick-kicking-ass action, cool lighting, a kickass score by The Chemical Brothers -- and that's about it. Good enough for a minor escape, but it's largely just fluffy nonsense.

The Event
When we last left Sophia, she and the remaining 1/3 of the aliens who weren't bombed into oblivion were traveling through their wormhole portal thing. They end up back in that Alien Cul de Sac, and the government blames the Washington Monument attack on Pakistani terrorists.
Sterling and President Underwood set Alien Asian Hottie up to be revealed as an alien. But AAH gets tipped off by an unknown caller that it's a setup. The mystery caller helps AAH escape the White House.
President Underwood enlists Senator Virginia Madsen to introduce a bill in Congress to get mandatory blood testing for every American so they can uncover other aliens. Damn, that's cold. She suggests having the CDC say there's an outbreak of drug-resistent TB and that every American needs to be tested for it. And they're going to start with a pilot program that tests people in the White House, so they can find any other possible moles. The First Lady refuses to comply, saying she has ethical issues with it. Time to suspect her! I'm sorry - why is the Senator leading this campaign? Is there no Health and Human Services Secretary?
Sophia talks to the remaining aliens and reveals her plans to bring the 2 billion (!) endangered aliens to Earth. Make some room, humans!
Just when I thought we were going to get a break from That Annoying Prick Sean, he's planning his big attack on Hal Holbrook in France. He releases That Chick from his Convenient Blackmail Computer Virus and says he's going to do this on his own -- but no, she's going to go with him. Wow, that's original. Whatever.
In the Land of 1000 Characters, Leila's bitching to her dad about something or other, and still no one seems to care about the little sister who's no longer with them. Screw her, even though Leila crossed the country 3 different times to find her. Alien Asian Hottie comes over and tells Leila's dad that he doesn't want any part of this human extinction plan, and wants Leila and her dad to go with him. Ugh - are you sure, sweetie? You want that dumb chick with you?
Time for a shootout at Hal Holbrook's French compound, where he is reading some ancient scroll from his French Archeological Dig. He explains to That Chick that he's a Sentinel who is here to protect "us" from "them" (points to sky). Sean, meanwhile, escapes the shootout and goes back to the hideout to deal with That Chick's pal, Frency McFrencherson, and make believe he's Jack Bauer, faux-torturing him because he set them up for an ambush and he wants to know where That Chick is being held. You, sir, are no Jack Bauer. Sean nearly pukes while whacking the dude with a hammer. PUSSY! His lame torture tactics work, however, and Frenchy gives up her location.
Leila's dad is as much of an asshole as his daughter is, and tells Sophia about Alien Asian Hottie's plan to run away. She's pissed and has him hauled off somewhere. Hey, wherever it is, it's got to be better than being on a roadtrip with Leila.

Top Chef All-Stars: The Finale
Michael v. Richard - I like this matchup. They're both amazing - you'd think Richard would be the favorite, but it's really anyone's game. Michael's been great this season. I like that there are only 2 finalists too - no one's in the middle, you either win or lose.
Final Challenge: Create the restaurant of your dreams with a 4-course tasting menu.
Former contestants are brought in to be sous chefs, but first they each have to create an amuse-bouche. And then Michael and Richard have to do a blind taste test to pick their teams. Richard gets Spike, Angelo, and Antonia; Michael gets Ginger Tiffany, Jamie (OH NO!), and Carla.
I want Michael's spiced beet salad. Tom creams himself over Michael's fish course and pork (with pepperoni sauce!) - and they sound really amazing - but the dessert kind of bombs. Richard has a million protein combinations -- and foie gras ice cream. *puke* So yeah - they should just never make dessert on this show.
Winner: Richard!! Yay for him - Richard rules, even if he is a crybaby.

The Event
That Annoying Prick Sean and That Chick are on the run from the bumbling, inept Secret Service. Sean makes the "I'll expose your son's location" threat for the 100th time to keep That Chick around. Cuz it's time for a road trip to France!!!!
The Alien Meeting Place is surrounded and ready for a good bombing. President Underwood gives Sophia 10 minutes to get her people to surrender. Sterling wants the aliens kept alive so they can be questioned, but President Underwood really has a hard-on for some alien extermination.
Sophia and Thomas try to get their man to "portal" them out of there. I guess we're making that a verb now? Portal? He doesn't have the fuel required to transport all of the aliens, so instead he makes an earthquake at the White House. And the motherlovin' Washington Monument collapses and gets swallowed up into the ground. Is that all you got? It's just a worthless tourist trap anyway.
Sophia calls back with a demand - get us some buses and a plane or else DC gets destroyed. Alright, so she's not trying to make nice any longer....
That Annoying Prick Sean and That Chick are on a private plane to France - what, no boat that crosses the ocean in 4 hours? She video-chats with her mom to check on her son, and they find out the Washington Monument has been destroyed.
Over in France, Hal Holbrook visits an archeological dig he's been funding. The guy who's doing his digging entered some chamber that he wasn't supposed to, so Hal Holbrook kills him. Then he brings some other guy into the chamber, which leads to a cave painting of guardian angels. One of the symbols matches a tattoo on Hal Holbrook's arm. It's all so shocking!
Thomas and Sophia are doing a lot of talking, but all I'm focused on is this lisp Thomas has developed. Never noticed it before. And now it's ALL I hear. Cuz they're just rambling on and on about leadership and stuff. When Thomas says, "sixty-six years" it makes my skin crawl. They end up hugging and practically making out, so I guess all is forgiven now.
Sterling picks now to remember that Thomas was the lab tech when Alien Asian Hottie had his blood test done and passed as human. Seriously -- he suddenly, conveniently realizes this? Lame.
Hey guess what - Our Favorite Idiots are in France, heading to a safehouse. Good thing she has all these connections that no one uses to track them down. We know it's France because there is soup and baguettes and wine. That Chick and New, Annoying French Dude catch up and tell stupid old stories. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Back at the House of Aliens, Leila is all bitchy with her father. "Is it true? About the Monument?" I know, right? A monument! How dare they!!!! I hope she gets a bullet between those big eyes.
The buses approach the House of Aliens, and Sophia gives her 687th speech about remaining calm and standing strong and showing President Underwood what's what. President Underwood and Sterling decode a phone conversation between Alien Asian Hottie and Sophia (I missed that entire process, but I'm sure it was pointless and out-of-nowhere) where she tells him that she's bluffing and doesn't have the fuel to destroy DC just yet. President Hard-On For War orders a bus bombing. The first bus (the one that contains all the no-name aliens) is destroyed.
And now Portal Guy has enough fuel to "portal" one bus only!! Thomas tells him to save Sophia's bus. Her bus (which conveniently also contains Leila) is whisked away to safety while Thomas's blows the eff up. Finally - no more lisp.

Fringe
Let me first say "Thank you" to FOX for showing faith in Fringe and renewing it. You guys rock, and I'll have your babies.
We're in the Other Universe with pregnant Fauxlivia being tested for some disease that killed her sister in childbirth and will kill the mother and possibly the baby (it turns out she is a carrier). She's also busy being kidnapped immediately following her appointment. She's taken to a makeshift medical facility where random stuff is done to her. Whatever it is, it doesn't look good. There are injections and glowy things.
Bubbles the Taxi Driver is back! He's been following Fauxlivia because he's been concerned, especially since she doesn't know who he is. He makes Lincoln more suspicious of his idea that the Olivias could have been switched. Lincoln confronts Walternate, who confirms the switch. He also fills Lincoln in on the future-grandchild thing, and says he's worried that the kidnapping could be directed at him.
Soon, the baby (it's a boy!) looks like it's trying to bust through Fauxlivia's stomach. This machine that looked a lot like a dental x-ray machine apparently cooks babies like a microwave cooks turkeys, because suddenly Fauxlivia is full term. But even full term, Fauxlivia kicks ass, and fights her way out. She escapes into Chinatown and gets a call in to Lincoln to tell him she's giving birth. Bubbles drives him, and they help her deliver. Lincoln tells Fauxlivia he loves her, and I really thought she was going to die. Lincoln was crying, I really thought this was over. But both Fauxlivia and Baby Boy survive.
Lincoln and Charlie continue to be an awesome team. And now they're both really suspicious about Walternate and what else he's done behind their backs.
And he's doing a lot behind their backs - he was responsible for Fauxlivia's kidnapping. Dun-dun-dun.
This Week's Code: FATED.
A) No new episodes for 3 weeks!
B) Only 4 left!
C) Next up: the team uses LSD to enter Olivia's mind. LSD always brings about great things on this show!

Top Chef All-Stars: The Finale... Almost
Quickfire Challenge: They each have to do a separate "Best of" challenge. Antonia has to work with canned goods, Richard has to make something with hot dogs, and Michael has to do one-pot cooking. Then they have a twist halfway through - Michael can't use utensils or hand tools, Richard can only use one hand, and Antonia has to have Carla glued to her side. Michael wins for the 1000th time in a row.
Final Challenge: Create a "last supper" for a culinary icon. Michael chose Michelle Bernstein, and then assigned Morimoto to Antonia and Wolfgang Puck to Richard.
Michelle wants fried chicken, biscuits, and gravy. Wolfgang wants goulash and apple strudel, and Morimoto wants - go figure - Japanese food. Poor Antonia.
Michael mixed things up and did an empanada instead of a biscuit, but Michelle still liked it. Richard's stuff looked good. This final challenge didn't seem as big as the final challenges of the past. I don't know - didn't they always have to make 5 course meals? Although these chefs had no help, and I think in finales they usually are given old contestants as sous chefs.
BUT WAIT. That's not the final challenge - only 2 will move on. Jesus, this is the longest finale! There have been like 56 stages! I guess I missed Stage No. 42.
Richard is deemed safe, and then we come to Stage 7,432. Antonia and Michael have to make a one-bite dish for all of the judges. Jesus Christ.
Bye-bye: Antonia. I wasn't even paying attention. I'm mostly pissed that I thought LAST week was the finale, and then thought THIS week was the finale, and I was wrong both times. Give me my goddamn finale!!

The Event
Thomas receives a response to the message he sent - that something terrible happened back home. He calls Sophia to tell her that the message is game-changing, and they all need to gather to discuss.
Hal Holbrook is picking out "special" girls at the playground, in the creepiest old man way possible.
That Annoying Prick Sean demands to know who The Chick is working for. He threatens the release of her family's address on the internet. Guess what - there are a lot of addresses on the internet. Jesus Christ. But this works, and she tells him Hal Holbrook's name, and that the Vice President was behind the assassination attempt.
They drive to see the VP in Washington (no, really). From a diner, Sean hacks the guest list to a DC party (sure, right) and then next thing you know Sean and That Chick are barging into some random couple's room and assuming their identity for the party (fingerprints and all - Jesus Christ, this show). That Sean - his hacking knows no bounds.
They get into the party and confront the VP with their plastic gun -- they want the proof to put away Hal Holbrook. Sean puts the gun all up in the VP's neck and is all "I'm a crazy guy! I'll do anything!" Douche. The VP says Hal Holbrook is in France. Perfect - Sean should be able to drive there in 3 hours.... The Secret Service bust in and Sean and That Chick get away. Of course they do. On the road to France, no doubt.
Meanwhile, the Government finds out Sophia's location, and follow her to the Alien Meeting To Discuss The Message That Must Be Discussed In-Person. Leila follows her Alien Guardian too so now she's in the meeting. I hope the Government decides to bomb the place!
And this all-important message that came from the Home Planet? Their Sun has started going supernova, and the planet is less than a year from being uninhabitable. Time to bring everyone to Earth.
Marines swarm the building, preparing to attack. Build up. Suspense. And then nothing.
Guess what happened in this episode? Nothing. They keep teasing that damn image of the Washington Monument crumbling - bring it on, dammit!

Fringe
I'm so ready for the craziest show on television to get crazier. Possession? Sure, why not.
The Team is studying Bell-livia - Olivia is possessed by William Bell while Olivia's consciousness is sleeping. Peter wants him out already because, let's face it, he doesn't want to bang Olivia like this. Bell just needs 48 hours to find a new host for his consciousness. No worries, he says, Olivia's just sleeping and will be fine.
Freak of the Week: (Yes, on this show, Bell-livia does NOT count as the Freak of the Week) A woman who can't die.
Special Agent Lincoln Lee (yay!) is investigating the woman, who was murdered 18 months ago (for the first time anyway). Since then, she has been at the scene of several suicides -- when the other person dies, she sucks their life force and doesn't die.
I can't say I entirely followed what this woman's deal was, but she has been trying to die and can't. She met a guy who for some reason confessed to her right before he killed himself that he had planted a bomb on a train. Then she went to sit in the exact seat, hoping that the bomb finally kills her, that dying with a lot of people will help seal the deal.
The Team figures all of this out, including that she's sitting on a train bomb. I'll just chalk that up to the awesome deductive powers of Lincoln Lee. Plus the fact that the bomb dude left an invoice for plastic explosives in his bathroom. That's smart.
The Team stops the train, but the woman runs off with the bomb. It explodes safely out in a field and she finally dies. Lincoln goes back to the Hartford office, but I hope to hell they call him back to work with them again!!
Bell-livia rules because she wears black turtlenecks, raises her eyebrow, and mildly hits on Astrid. And it was SO much fun to see Walter get along with his old partner, with their inside jokes and recreational drug use.
All Peter and Bell-livia conversations have zero eye contact on his part - it's awesome. He's super annoyed. When they're having a conversation at the end, they hear church bells in the distance. At that point, Olivia awesomely comes out for a second, Peter gets happy, and then Bell's all, "Oopsie, maybe it's more complicated than I thought." Love it!

Top Chef All-Stars
Quickfire Challenge: Prove your consistency by creating 100 identical dishes in an hour. They work in pairs so it ends up being Boys v. Girls. Tiffany and Antonia make a beef tenderloin salad while Michael and Richard make fresh pasta and bolognese sauce. The Girls win in an upset.
Elimination Challenge: Make lunch on a deserted island - and use conch, which you must catch yourself. Oh god, we don't need to see these chefs in swimming suits. It's gross.
Richard made sweet potato "linguine" with conch and lobster. Antonia's seared snapper with conch tartare was apparently hella spicy (but in a good way). Tiffany made conch and coconut chowder plus conch ceviche - and her chowder came out cold. Michael was heavy-handed with the butter, but his banana leaf wrapped grouper with braised pineapple and conch vinaigrette sounded the best to me, plus really incorporated local ingredients.
Winner: Michael. Awesome!
Bye-bye: Tiffany. With her cold and too-sweet soup, that makes sense. She definitely didn't belong in this Final Three.

The Event
Thomas and the aliens he broke out of the Alaskan prison are riding through some neighborhood in a bunch of big, black SUVs. Apparently they own all the homes in this little subdivision. He wants everyone to work on the portal to bring other aliens here.
Sterling's back at work already. Damn. I guess it makes sense - he looks like a zombie already, so he probably doesn't need his blood. Alien Asian Hottie sure does have a lot of access to the President. How the hell does he get to sit at the table? What's his job again?
Michael drops his miserable daughters off with some couple, the female of whom is Andrea from 90210 and the male of whom is an alien. Then Michael and Sophia go to meet up with this dude who has half of his face melted off to try to find Thomas. They torture him until he spills that he's supplying Thomas with uranium to power the array, and that he plans to get the uranium from a nuclear power plant. Turns out, Melted Face and Thomas have tried this before - with Chernobyl. Dun dun DUN! Sophia tells the President so they can work to remove the uranium from the facility.
I can't even discuss Leila digging through an overnight bag to find her sister's blanket. A blanket that took up the whole overnight bag. I get the feeling sometimes that actress doesn't know what to do with her hands. I hate her. I also hate That Annoying Prick Sean, who is drowning his sorrows at a bar. The chick next to him actually says to the pushy guy she's with, "You're not the boss of me!" - really? people who aren't 5 say that? - and Sean intervenes in their fight. Much crappy "fighting" ensues. And then he breaks into a woman's house and eats from her refrigerator. Wait. I feel like I lost time somewhere there - he just left the bar I guess? He knows this woman, but I don't know who she is. He wants her help to run away to Mexico. Careful, dude, they behead people there. Actually, go for it, Sean! Let me help you!
The government works on moving the nuclear material, but Thomas had set that whole thing up precisely so that they WOULD move it - and so they can hijack the truck. And Melted Face is really good at breaking out of handcuffs using electrical wire from a live outlet whilst not getting electrocuted. As Thomas and his crew descend upon the convoy, Melted Face attacks Sophia (Thomas told him to kill her). Michael comes in and kills Melted Face, and Thomas is successful in getting the uranium out of Alien Asian Hottie's incapable hands. (Seriously, what is his job!? Now he's escorting uranium!?)
Hey, remember that sexy brunette chick who was working with D.B. Sweeney and Hal Holbrook? Yeah, I don't really either. But Sean does and he shows up at her house too. He really likes breaking into chicks' houses - good thing they all live near each other, huh? He wants to know who she works for, how to stop them, blah blah blah.
This show is such a pointless mess!

Fringe
We open with Walter smoking weed with Hurley. This is gonna be a good episode!
Hurley's just a security guard whose sole purpose is to tell Walter which office was William Bell's. Well, that was disappointing. Walter raids the office, on a rampage to try to save our Universe. He says he needs Bell's help, and wants to contact him by using "soul magnets".
Freak of the Week: Guys that are essentially giant helium balloons. They are 2 masked guys repelling from a building, and when one is shot by a guard, he escapes his weighted gravity boots and floats weightless. It's a pretty cool effect when the team investigates the body and it's floating around and tethered in the lab.
Eventually, the body drops to the ground and is super-heavy. The helium guy who escaped starts bleeding from the eyeballs and then dies. He was the subject of an experiment in anti-gravity, conducted by one Cameron Frye from Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Cameron starts dismembering the body. Jesus Christ, Cameron! Peter and Olivia arrive to the gruesome scene and find a walk-in freezer full of dismembered bodies. Jesus Christ, show!
Speaking of those two, Olivia and Peter are officially a couple now. I guess I just have to accept it and move on. Walter's happy about it, Nina's happy about it, so I'll be happy. They're very happy-couple-y, all with the dating-while-investigating and holding hands in the hallway.
The bodies all have a high concentration of some precious metal, which was the metal the 2 thieves were breaking into the building to steal. The deceased were also all confined to wheelchairs before participating in the experiment. And now Cameron has taken to preying upon more handicapped guys, looking for new subjects.
Cameron injects a new subject, who floats out of his chair. He then tells the guy it's only temporary because he needs more of that mystery metal, and the guy volunteers to steal it. We find out that Cameron's son is also confined to a wheelchair, and the reason for his experiments.
Floating Thief #3 helps Cameron break into the Museum of Science in order to steal some meteorites that have the metal. Unfortunately for them, the Fringe Team is also heading there to get a sample of those meteorites, and they're nicked.
In the end, Peter comes clean with Olivia and tells her about his side project - studying the data discs from the shapeshifters he killed. And Walter determines that the way to communicate with William Bell's soul is through his, well, bell. He rings it and awaits Bell's return communication. While Peter and Olivia are talking, OLIVIA CHANNELS WILLIAM BELL!!!!!!!!! Holy crap - she's possessed by him! Anna Torv is officially playing her third character on this show!!!!!!!!!! She doing a full-blown impression of Spock! I love it!!!!
OMG - next week she's still possessed and Lincoln's over here!!!!!!!! I'm squeeing!! This show is so effed up!!!!
This Week's Code: EARTH.

Top Chef All-Stars
It's finale time in the Bahamas. Richard's kid is due any day and he's naming her Embry Lotus. Oh good god.
Quickfire Challenge: Compete head-to-head with the winner of their respective seasons. Who the eff is Hosea? I totally don't remember him. OK, maybe I do. But I would never have named him among the winners. I watch too much damn television. Richard, Tiffany, and Mike win their competitions.
Elimination Challenge: Cook for Bahamian "royalty" (what turns out to be the King of Junkanoo - kind of like Caribbean Mardi Gras). While in the kitchen, one of the deep fryers catches fire and puts a hold on everything. Flaming oil will do that. And now all the food they were cooking is contaminated by fire extinguishers and what not. Gross. And also that sucks - the chefs have to start over.
Carla does pork and decides to cook it differently. Why does she always insist on going against what she knows!? It's raw in the middle. Nice. Now it's gonna be twice-cooked pork. Antonia makes fried shrimp and grits and it elicits Tom's Diss of the Day: "Howard Johnson called and wants their garnish back." Meow.
Mike makes chicken with a lobster hash; Tiffany makes pork and dirty rice. Doesn't she ALWAYS make pork and dirty rice? Richard does braised lamb.
Winner: Mike. Yeah, I think it's all him and Richard in the finale. Richard's safe too so it's all 3 chicks at the bottom. Women stink.
Bye-bye: Carla. Uncooked pork will do that to you. She always screws herself.

The Event
So this show is back. Great. For 2 hours tonight. Greater.
The aliens launched a communications satellite to send a message into deep space. The government works to figure out what they said, because the satellite self-destructed right after. They've got the first line of the message: "Preparations are being made for your arrival." AWESOME! See, cuz I like this show in concept -- and when it's not about That Annoying Prick Sean and His Dumb Girlfriend. Have they died yet?
Sophia and Alien Asian Hottie are working to figure out where Thomas is so they can stop him from doing whatever the hell it is he's doing. Who knows. He's in Tibet, where they're working on some huge communications array.
Virginia Madsen has joined the cast as the meddling wife-now-Senator of a dead Senator from Alaska, who insists on sticking her nose into just what the hell is going on at that alien prison in her state. President Underwood puts her in her place and tells her to mind her business.
Bad news! That Annoying Prick Sean and His Dumb Girlfriend are alive, and still sorting through the burned case files that prove her dad's an alien. She just assumes it's all some vast Photoshop conspiracy. Some chick shows up and there's lots of horrible tough-guy acting. Putting your hand around a chick's throat doesn't make you Jack Bauer, Sean. Ass. The chick doesn't really tell them much, other than that Leila and her sister are special because their father doesn't age at a normal rate. Yeah, thanks - we get it - he's an alien. Also, her sister was taken away in a white van.
Leila's father, Michael, is freed from his prison transport van by Alien Asian Hottie. He's a bit of a pariah in the alien community, not just because he piloted the plane that nearly killed Sophia, but also because he was never supposed to have those dumb daughters of his.
That Annoying Prick Sean and His Dumb Girlfriend find that white van awfully quickly. What ensues is a laughably-poor-quality car chase/ramming. I've seen better car chases on old episodes of The Dukes of Hazzard. It's 2011, bitches. They save Leila's sister and run. Awesome - now they have a kid dragging them down! Actually, they could probably use the brainpower....
As a condition for helping Sophia find Thomas, Michael insists on seeing his daughters, so they rendezvous in an oil field somewhere. Seriously. And Leila treats her dad like he's contagious. Newsflash, bitch - if he's an alien, so are you. Was he supposed to bring it up when you were in kindergarten or something? Die.
Thomas and Friends break into the Alaskan alien prison to free all of their pals. Director Sterling is there for a visit, so Thomas is excited to take his ass out. Sterling's good with a gun though, so he puts up a fight. He gets shot in the back/rib area, and eventually captured, but is still pretty badass. He even escapes after a good beating and another gunshot wound. And now he's in an Alaskan blizzard, bleeding everywhere. That can't be good.
Sophia and Sean are talking in a kitchen. Wait - did I fall asleep? How did this happen? She lets him know what's at stake - if Thomas is able to get all the aliens down to the Lower 48, the U.S. (if not the world) is going to be destroyed.
Leila's Alien Father tells her that the aliens are from a place called NGC253. "What am I?" Leila yells. Really, sweetie? You're a freak. Duhhhhh. He tells her they have to get out of here (wherever here is - still the oil field?) -- but that Sean can't come with them, cuz he knows too much already. Plus he's annoying.
Senator Madsen goes on Hardball to discuss the Alaskan prison. She takes calls during commercial breaks, and President Underwood calls her to get her to shut up. Really? She A) is taking calls on set and B) has a freaking microphone on while talking with the President. Add those together with Chris Matthews, and he should really be pushing harder to get at what this "secret government program" is. She gives him some political soundbite-speak answer.
Sean leaves while Leila's sleeping, I guess so she doesn't have to make the choice between his dumb ass and her father's dumb ass. Now he's off wandering around again, and Hal Holbrook wants to find him for some reason. Who the hell knows.
BUT THE WORST PART OF THIS WHOLE THING? THEY ARE USING A LINKIN PARK SONG OVER THE "THIS SEASON ON THE EVENT" CLIPS. NOOOOOO!!!! Leave Linkin Park out of this, you bastards. You've done enough.

No Dale. I can't go on.
Quickfire Challenge: Make a dish using ingredients from a snack bar - on a ferry to Ellis Island. Lots of nasty food ensues, especially Mike's bread soup. Carla wins for some sliced oranges, and catty "Sour Grapes" Richard is bitter. He's a sore loser.
Elimination Challenge: Create a dish based on your ancestry.
Mike made some amazing-looking gnocchi. Antonia made some amazing-looking veal and risotto. I'm all about the Italians at this point. Tiffany made short ribs, but then they were accompanied by pig's feet, so that killed it for me. Richard threw some fried bone marrow in with his meat, but it was all allegedly amazing. At that point, Carla's the only one left, and they've all hit it out of the park. But she makes braised pork shoulder, grits, and biscuits, so how can you go wrong? Damn, lots of good food tonight, and no clear mistakes.
Winner: Antonia. Then Mike is safe, then Richard. And then they keep Tiffany and Carla too. Of course they did. How convenient. They allegedly couldn't decide. Hey, you're gonna have to cut them at some point, why keep waiting? So it's 5 for the Finale in the Bahamas.

The Adjustment Bureau

Jesus. Do actors get any more charismatic than Matt Damon? I mean, the man has such an easygoing humor about him - you just can't help but be charmed! In The Adjustment Bureau, he plays a character who is essentially Matt Damon running for Senate, so right away you love him.
The movie is about fate and chance and The Chairman/God who has a Plan for all of humankind. It doesn't get too deep about that stuff though - it deals with it more in a slick way, as an excuse for awesome foot chases and cool hats. I felt at times like they were holding back from the story because they thought the audience would be too dumb to really go with it. And they're probably right. But you can't go wrong with a good Matt Damon film where he gets to be a heroic and charming.
For sure, the movie is more romance than sci-fi -- more about the whole "meant to be together" thing and if it's worth the risk. But it's still very cool. The whole design of the movie is cool, like the way that the Adjustment Bureau's Observer-types navigate the NYC streets. Oh yes, and Anthony Mackie is in it. And Anthony Mackie just plain rules.

Quickfire Challenge: Create a deep-fried dish for Paula Deen. I'm pretty sure Paula just said she's deep-fried balls of butter before. I guess that doesn't shock me. Michael wins for a dish that Richard accuses him of plagiarizing from him. Whatever, Richard - don't show a fellow competitor your secret notebook and he can't steal from you. It's a competition.
Elimination Challenge: Make Gulf Coast seafood and Southern food for a fundraiser - and do it paired with a former contestant. Disappointingly, there's no good drama with the pairings. Damn.
Winner: Richard and his fish/pulled pork combination, which sounds gross but apparently wasn't.
Tiffany, Carla, and Dale are in the bottom and I'm sweating it out that Dale's a goner with his cruddy stew. How can he be so good one week and crappy the next? Damn this show!
Bye-bye: Dale. And that sound you just heard was a cry of agony. GODDAMMIT!!!!!

Fringe
Flashback Episode - which means kickass 80s retro credits. You really have to love Fringe's dedication to the time period - low-quality audio on Betamax recordings, retro bag of Peanut M&Ms, all the old computer equipment. Love it!
Young Peter once tried to drown himself in an icy lake, thinking it would take him back home to Earth 2. There's lots of, "You're not my mother and you're not my father!" drama. Wow, so this poor kid knew he was stolen -- but at some point he must forget or something, right? I guess I should have realized he'd know he was kidnapped, and that he didn't belong - but I suppose I figured he'd kind of developed amnesia or something as a result of his illness or the crossover.
Walter's conducting his experiments on his kids in Jacksonville, and Little Olivia's being beaten by her stepfather. She crosses over for the first time when she runs away from him. Walter figures out fear is the key, and so frightens poor Olivia until she unleashes a fireball in the lab and disappears.
Other Universe. Walternate and his wife are dealing with the aftermath of Peter's mysterious kidnapping. Walternate works for Bishop Dynamic, where there's a space shuttle launching pad outside his window. He also drinks a lot. (Whereas, in Our Universe, Peter's mom develops the taste for booze when she can't stand lying to Peter.)
Our Universe. Young Peter finds Young Olivia hiding out in a white tulip field. OK, it's weird that they met each other and don't remember. These kids better develop amnesia in a couple years or something. Then again, my memory sucks... but I never had a traumatic fireball incident either. I'd probably remember everything surrounding that.
Olivia confesses to Walter that her stepfather hits her, and that that's when she crosses over to the Other Universe. Unfortunately, she crossed over right before going into the office, so really she confesses to Walternate. And that's how Walternate came to know about the Other Universe.
This Week's Code: SWITCH.

I've Done It!
It came down to the wire, but I have now seen all 10 films nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. Normally, there are some on the list that I don't have any interest in seeing, but since they all seemed good this time, I figured I'd try to see them all. I saw Winter's Bone, which is a dark, depressing movie about poor, dirty hicks... but it's good, I promise! The young lead, Jennifer Lawrence, is most definitely deserving of her Best Actress nomination - she carried the whole movie. And I finally got out to see The Fighter and loved it. It's pretty much your typical, feel-good sports film, but the performances are amazing. Christian Bale is just as good as you've heard he is - really disappearing into the role. Mark Wahlberg kind of plays Mark Wahlberg, as always, but he's great. Their family of sisters is hysterically crass, and their mother is a flaming bitch. I'm a sucker for foul-mouthed, working-class, Boston-accented families. They're awesomely horrible.
My Oscar Picks:
I still have to give Best Picture to Inception. No other movie made me leave it instantly wanting to see it again. No other movie sparked conversation and debate for months. Christopher Nolan not being nominated himself is Grade A Bullshit - the movie is amazing and original. Honestly, though, each of the 10 movies is amazing in its own way (I love how varied they all are!) and I can't be pissed if any of them win. (Unlike last year, when I would have thrown something out the window if Avatar or The Blind Side had won.)
Best Actor is tough - I've seen 4 of the 5. I actually just watched last year's A Single Man and think Colin Firth should have won for that, and that Jeff Bridges should win this year instead for True Grit. But since Jeff won last year, let's just call it even and give it to Colin.
I've only seen 3 of the Best Actress nominees, but that doesn't stop me from passing judgment and saying Natalie Portman should win for Black Swan. She was great - and has a decent history of great roles - plus I want to see her onstage in a fabulous dress with her baby bump. (It would be secretly great if Jennifer Lawrence won for Winter's Bone.)
Best Supporting Actor: I really, really wanted to give it to my boy Jeremy Renner -- until today when I saw Christian Bale in The Fighter. That son of a bitch has been amazing for years and it's about time he get the recognition!!
Best Supporting Actress: Hailee Steinfeld for True Grit. Now that I think about it, her role was kind of like Jennifer Lawrence's - tough, young girl and everything - it would be kickass for feminism if they both won. I just liked Hailee's role a lot and thought she really held her own with the likes of Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon. Honestly, Melissa Leo in The Fighter played a hateful role so well that she made me hate her too much. Also, she took out hella tacky "For Your Consideration" ads which knocked her down a couple notches. I'm rooting for the young bitch in this one.
The End.

Fringe
Freak of the Week: A haunted apartment building in Park Slope, which results in a bunch of people at a party falling to their deaths on the street below. Freaky.
It's not haunted though - it's coming apart - a tear in the Universe. The people didn't jump off the balcony, the balcony just disappeared beneath their feet for a bit and they fell through. The dead dude who appears to his wife isn't a ghost, he's from the Other Universe.
This was a great Walter episode - he gets hella bitchy and testy as he's investigating. I love unstable Walter. He's concerned that this "soft spot" will open up into a vortex, and he wants to be ready with some amber to encase the building and prevent the spread.
Olivia's not keen on starting the whole amber thing over in this Universe. So instead it becomes this whole thing about the woman grieving her dead husband on This Side and the man grieving his dead wife on the Other, and their inability to let go of each other. Look, the show has gotten hella touchy-feely lately, but this is a little crazy! It's all about feelings, people! All about feeeeeeeelingggggggs!
Anyway, the old couple resolves their feelings in the nick of time, and the amber isn't needed. But Walter knows this is all just a sign of things to come - more cracks in the Universe to come.
Here's the most important question to come out of this thing: Are there really old people named Derek? That was the old dude's name. Just seems like a younger name to me.
In the end, Olivia goes to see Peter and they go upstairs to hook up. We switch to the Other Universe, where Lincoln and Fauxlivia investigate a possible rift in their version of the apartment building. Hi, Lincoln!!
Fun Fact of the Week: The President doesn't like Broyles because Broyles beat him at golf.
Walter's Food Thing of the Week: Walter made loads of blueberry pancakes for Peter and Olivia, trying to get those 2 crazy kids together. Unfortunately, after tense relationship talk and a call from Broyles, they weren't hungry.
This Week's Code: HEARTS. See? It's all about feelings.

Quickfire Challenge: Make cookies, which will be judged by Elmo and Cookie Monster. Enough schtick from the damn Muppets - I want to see some cookies!! Angelo and Michael have never made cookies before, so I am already 100% better than they are. Dale makes some freaking amazing-sounding no-bake cookies out of potato chips, pretzels, and chocolate ganache. I REALLY want him to marry me NOW. Dale wins!!
Elimination Challenge: Raid a Target in the middle of the night and create a dish for 100 employees. They have to get everything there - knives, rice cookers, cutting boards, tables, dishes, whatever they need.
There's a lot of soup being made. Dale re-creates dorm living and makes tomato soup cooked in a rice cooker and grilled cheese -- grilled with an iron!!!! MARRY ME!!
Antonia, Dale, and Richard all put forth the most effort, and were all in the top. Winner: DALE!!! Holy crap!! He won $25,000 for that freaking soup and iron-grilled cheese!!!! I LOVE THAT CRAZY BASTARD!!!
Bye-bye: Angelo for his salty-ass potato soup. I kind of felt bad for him - because he showed actual human emotion in the end - but then again YAY! No more Euro-Douche who wears knee-high black socks!!

Quickfire Challenge: Create a unique fondue. They mostly look good -- lots of cheese, some chocolate, it's all good with me. The contestants judge each other, and Dale, Antonia, and Angelo are at the top. The winner is Dale and his Pho-ndue. Gotta give it up to him for the pun alone. Go Dale!
Elimination Challenge: Corporate Synergy Alert! Cook one of Jimmy Fallon's favorite foods for his birthday. The dishes they have to cook are chosen via Cell Phone Shootout, which appears to be a game played on Jimmy Fallon's show. Yes, Jimmy Fallon appears to have a show.
How is beef tongue one of his favorite foods!? PUKE! Antonia has to make that, otherwise people get things like burgers, Ramen noodles, chicken pot pie, and chicken and dumplings. Dale makes a cheesesteak on a pretzel roll and blows my mind. Dale, will you marry me!? They said it had too much salt. That's OK, I love salt. The marriage is still on. On a related note, Angelo's pulled pork sounded amazing, but I still hate him.
The show's a little annoying, and I blame the energy that Fallon brought. The contestants were even more attention-whorey than usual. Even Angelo was making up songs about beef tongue.
Winner: Carla. She also gets a cooking segment on Jimmy's show. She was the craziest of all of them this episode. Don't start annoying me, hon.
Bye-bye: Fabio. I'm OK with that, only because I was really sweating it out that Dale was gonna get the boot for his salt-fest. Fabio made a bad burger, so screw him.
P.S.: Thanks for the huge in-show commercial for Buitoni pasta, assholes.

Fringe
We return to the Other Universe! Fauxlivia greets her boyfriend at the airport. At the same airport, Poor Man's Robert DeNiro is slipping something into another guy's drink that makes a billion beetles eat their way out of his body.
Somewhere in the midst of the opening, I get a vibe. A vibe I don't like. Is Fauxlivia gonna be knocked up by Peter!!!!????? If true, I'm gonna freak. OK, let me take a deep breath and get back to the show.
Fringe Division works on the beetle case (these beetles are rare - they used to be found in sheep, but all the sheep died off in 2001). Poor Man's Robert DeNiro, meanwhile, runs an experiment on a beetle he took from the guy's body, and isn't happy with the result. So he tries again on a fellow diner patron. They figure out that he's trying to bring this beetle back from extinction, because this guy thinks he had the cure to the avian flu (which could have saved millions of people).
Fauxlivia's BF tells Lincoln that he's going to ask Fauxlivia to marry him, which Lincoln promptly tells Fauxlivia. Because he can't keep a secret. I love the Otherworldly Fringe Team so much! Fauxlivia, Charlie, and Lincoln RULE! He ends up asking her spontaneously while she's leaving the house, and she says yes. I'm still worried she's pregnant. But I really like Fauxlivia. It's amazing how different she is from Olivia, even while she's played by the same actress. Pretty cool.
When Lincoln and Fauxlivia track down the Mad Scientist's lab, they get separated and she gets captured by the Bad Guy! He feeds her the beetle solution, and the rescue team arrives just as she starts pre-beetle-explosion puking. So here's where I figure that they're working on the whole pregnancy/beetle gestation parallel. Because this show is all about parallels.
Fauxlivia's BF works on her in the ambulance while Lincoln and Charlie work on the Bad Guy to get a cure for her. Fauxlivia's BF gets out the ultrasound machine. Oh guess what - it's a BABY!!!! Turns out the Bad Guy had given himself the beetle solution, not her. And Fauxlivia's BF ditches her ass when he finds out she got pregnant while he was away - and when she can't answer the question, "Do you love him?" I mean, the dude moves out when she's recovering in the hospital. Cold!
And now I don't know what to feel. Am I always right? Yes. But are we now in even more soap opera territory than ever with this show? Yes. I don't know how to feel.
In future-grandfather news, Secretary Walternate's experiments continue. He injects a chemical from Olivia's brain into subjects, one of whom develops abilities, all of whom die. They figure they need to use younger subjects, but Walternate says no children. Also in the Other Universe, Walter is a smooth operator. Walternate has a hot Asian wife/GF in his bed and everything. Go Walternate! OK, it's a little weird to see Walter getting laid....
Gratuitous Maryland Shout-out of the Day: Obrycki's!
Fringe Code: ROMAD. I had to Google that to make sure I was right. The military meaning is Recon Observe Mark and Destroy. That totally fits!

Trailer of the Week
I'm all in on this X-Men: First Class movie!!! All in!!!! I really love that it's set in the '60s - it somehow makes it even cooler. It just looks so classic. And I LOVE me some Michael Fassbender. Love him. His Magneto's gonna be awesome.
